AHL Presented at the Canadian Psychological Association’s 83rd Annual Convention June 17-19, 2022

A couple of Adolescent Health Lab members recently presented at the Canadian Psychological Association’s 83rd Annual Convention and Tradeshow in Calgary to present their research. See below to view their posters and read about their findings.

Cassia McIntyre presented her Honours thesis which examined maltreatment as a risk factor for dating violence (DV) and risky sexual behaviour (RSB) among high-risk teens, and the moderating role of parent-child attachment. Findings showed that at very high levels of attachment insecurity, maltreatment predicted less RSB. Cassia has been exploring this interesting finding further to examine whether attachment anxiety and avoidance have different effects on the association between maltreatment and DV and RSB.

Brooke Davis presented her Honours thesis work which examined whether the expression of maternal callous-unemotional (CU) traits put youth at higher risk for developing serious maladaptive and behavioural problems, and if these effects are mediated by parenting behaviours. Results indicate that inconsistent maternal discipline mediates the effect of maternal CU on internalizing and externalizing symptoms in their youth. An unexpected finding on the association between maternal CU and lower levels of externalizing symptoms in youth raises further questions about the influence of CU on the reliability of
maternal reports on youth functioning.
