Prospective Graduate Students

Thank you for your interest in joining our graduate program and our research lab.

Typically I accept one graduate student every year or two years depending on the progress of other lab members. Your application to our graduate program will be independently reviewed and ranked by two faculty members. Those favourably reviewed are invited for an interview. If you have designated me as a possible supervisor, we will have an opportunity to meet during this interview and to discuss your research, training and career interests. I am most interested in supervising students who wish to pursue a research related career, either entirely or in combination with clinical practice through an appointment at a university, hospital or other institution.

Prospective Research Assistants

As a Research Assistant in The Adolescent Health Lab you will provide direct support to the Research Associate and senior Research Assistants in the context of our provincial evaluation of the attachment-focused intervention.

This volunteer position requires that the candidate be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a social science discipline. A minimum of one year of research experience in a related academic field (e.g., psychology, sociology, education) is preferred.

The Research Assistant will collaborate with our research team and will support research activities as outlined below. Must enjoy working with a fast-moving collaborative team of researchers and community partners; strong writing skills required. Familiarity with university ethics is an asset but not required. There are opportunities to contribute to professional and community presentations and journal ready manuscripts. We seek candidates who are strongly committed to research and eager to advance their research or academic careers through participation on published works.

 If you demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, you have problem solving skills and you’re resourceful, consider applying to join our lab! Knowledge of quantitative research methods, study design, implementation and outcome assessment is an asset. Computer literacy and knowledge of Excel software are essential. This position requires strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (both oral and written) skills, as well as the ability to learn quickly and function both independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities May Include: 

• Supporting and coordinating data collection and participant follow-up for large studies implementing and evaluating interventions for at-risk families.

• Supporting in preparation of community and professional conference presentations, manuscript preparation, and related knowledge translation activities for ongoing research projects.

• Opportunities to participate in/or launch new research.

• Data entry, transcription of interviews, coding, and related works.

You can expect to work two to three shifts per week (typical shifts are 2 – 5 hours in length). Weekend and evening hours are not typically required, although this may be needed under exceptional circumstances. Total anticipated work time is approximately 10 – 15 hours per week. You will be working in an office on the Burnaby Mountain campus of SFU or virtually.
